Our most impactful contribution by far comes from our funding, supporting and nurturing a community of extraordinarily talented and influential researchers who are world-leading in finding effective responses and viable solutions to this global existential challenge.
They include Professor Sir Richard Friend (Natural Sciences, Physics), Professor Erwin Reisner (Natural Sciences, Chemistry) and Professor Andy Woods (Mathematics), all working on cutting-edge technological advances in aspects of clean energy, who shared their research insights in a Souvient podcast with the Master, Heather Hancock.
Professor Laura Diaz Anadon (Land Economy) is the University’s Professor of Climate Change Policy, Vice-Chair of the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate and a Lead Author for the International Panel on Climate Change report on Climate Change Mitigation, while Professor Neil Arnold (Geography) heads the Scott Polar Institute and pursues wide-ranging research on glacier hydrology, Professor Ed Tipper (Earth Sciences) works on chemical weathering and its regulation of the Earth’s carbon cycle in geological timescales and Professor Chris Jiggins (Natural Sciences, Biological) explores population genomics in evolutionary biology.
Furthering the disciplinary reach, Dr Darshil Shah (Architecture and Design) develops bio-based materials to replace anthropogenic resources in construction and manufacturing and Dr Irene Dedoussi (Engineering) addresses the environmental impacts of aviation.
And this is just a snapshot of the research effort being made across disciplines to address this most urgent of issues.
St John’s benefits from our community of expertise on how to best address climate crisis issues in our own operations, while our academics relish the challenge of solving the sustainability dilemmas of our dynamic historic setting.
