There is a long tradition of Christian worship at St John’s reaching back to the College’s origins as the Hospital of St John the Evangelist, a 13th century religious community who shared hospitality, worship and education with those who were most in need in the city of Cambridge. St John's was born from this foundation and today the Chapel, as part of the Church of England, remains at the heart of College life and is home to a lively, welcoming and inclusive Christian community sustained by worship, prayer and care which flow beyond its walls.
It is a place to stretch the imagination, examine the conscience, and a safe space to ask questions before God. This is somewhere to reflect and consider the nature of what makes us human and how we can contribute to the good of our society and our world through love and service. Throughout the history of the College, notable Johnians have been inspired in their faith and work through worship here.
The current Victorian Chapel, completed in 1869, was designed by George Gilbert Scott, replacing an older Tudor Chapel, and is one of the most recognisable buildings in Cambridge with a nobility and beauty that takes your breath away. Our faith teaches that every person is beautiful in God’s eyes. This beauty echoes through our worship, our music and our surroundings and calls us to work for a world in which all are recognised and valued.
