We run a programme of in-person events and webinars throughout the year

Below you will find a number of events we have run recently, to give you a sense of what the College may be offering in the year ahead.

Year 11 Girls in Maths Visit Day

This was a multi-school in-person event for UK-based Year 11 female students (interested in studying Maths and Mathematical Sciences at academically competitive universities) and their teachers.

Our Year 11 Girls in Maths Visit Day was an opportunity for pupils and teachers to visit St John's and meet current and former Maths students, finding out more about learning and living here. There was a guided tour of the College and a Q&A session, both led by students. Lunch was provided and then there was an exciting Maths taster sessions from our academics, as well as an informative talk about applying and studying here.

The day enabled aspiring female mathematicians to explore challenging mathematical topics by working together in small groups, which supported their current studies as well as their university application journeys.

Poster Competition

The competition invited UK-based prospective applicants to conduct an independent research project that was assessed by St John's academics. This was an excellent super-curricular opportunity for students looking to make competitive university applications.

Year 12 Women in Maths Residential

During this free residential summer school, participants attended Sixth Term Examination Paper (STEP) workshops and taster lectures delivered by Cambridge academics and guest speakers, exploring a range of exciting mathematical topics.

There were challenging mathematical problems for participants to work on throughout the week, as well as guided group research projects and social activities led by current St John’s students. Participants’ meals and accommodation were provided free of charge by St John’s College.

Applications for this residential programme were open to female and non-binary students in Year 12 (England/Wales) or equivalent who were prospective undergraduate applicants for Cambridge in 2024-25, and were on track to achieve A* in Maths and Further Maths A-Levels (or equivalent grades/qualifications).

Places on the course were available to UK, EU and international students and we were keen to encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds.

Choral Events and Programmes

Opportunities for talented musicians to explore the prospect of joining the College's renowned Choir are available through the year.

  • St John's College Choral Awards Webinar

Year 11, 12 and 13 were invited to hear more about singing alto, tenor or bass in the Choir of St John's College, Cambridge. The Director of Music Christopher Gray presented an hour-long talk and interactive Q&A session.

  • St John's Year 12 Choral Residential

This residential was for students in Year 12 who were on track to meet their prospective Cambridge course's entry requirements and intend to sing alto, tenor or bass in a top-level College choir for 2025 entry. Places were limited and applicants were required to provide references regarding their academic and musical suitability.

  • St John's Choral Awards Open Day

For those curious about singing alto, tenor or bass with the Choir of St John's College, this day in College culminated with singing Evensong with the College Choir. Students learnt more about life as a member of St John's College Choir and had the opportunity to sing informally for Director of Music Christopher Gray.
