Why Choose St John's for Geography?

A reproduction of a map from Mercator's Atlas from 1613 in the College Library's Special Collections

St John’s has a long and distinguished tradition in Geography. Our teaching Fellows were students here themselves, glaciologist Professor Neil Arnold and economic geographer Professor Sarah Hall.

The expertise of our Fellows means that for all core elements of the first year Geography curriculum, human and physical, you will have supervisions in College.

With 6 to 8 undergraduates accepted for Geography each year, you’ll learn with and from your peers in College, a ready-made community of enthusiastic, fun and active geographers.

Our student-run geography society – the Purchas Society – organises events, talks and socials. A highlight each year is the Dissertation and Pizza Evening, where third years share top tips from their dissertation experience to help earlier year-groups to plan ahead.

Adventurous geographers at St John’s benefit from a range of travel grants, several reserved to geography students and others for experiencing wild places, and they make the most of these myriad opportunities to enrich their academic experience including dissertation-related travel.

Dissertation support

Our experienced Library staff offer weekly drop-in sessions focused on topics such as literature searches, referencing, copyright, plagiarism, study skills, time management and accessing online and physical resources in Cambridge libraries.

The College Archivist provides induction sessions to advise students on how they could use archives for their dissertation and how to navigate archives catalogues. Students can arrange one-to-one chats with the Archivist to discuss whether the College's institutional archives hold material relevant to their topic.

The Reading Room Exhibition can also be a great source of inspiration. If a student is using primary sources from the early modern period they can attend the online palaeography sessions run by the Archivist to practise reading late 15th-17th century handwriting.

Academic skills support

All St John's students have access to academic skills support throughout their studies. Academic skills workshops are offered throughout the academic year, and focus on a variety of topics including general study tips, essay-writing skills and revision strategies.

Some subjects hold compulsory academic skills workshops during the Michaelmas term. If you require individual support you can contact one of our Academic Skills Advisers, who each have a range of specialities, including  essay writing tips, numeracy, presentation skills, prioritisation and revision skills. We have specialists in Arts and Humanities and in STEM, and in particular in Engineering.

Every year, applications from students of St John's are invited to apply for Travel Exhibitions and Grants, for the promotion of travel.

Travel Grants

There are currently more than 20 travel grants available to students of St John's, made possible by generous donor funding. These funds are available to help students extend and develop their subject knowledge by, for example, travelling to archaeological sites abroad, further international understanding, undertake adventurous travel and much more.

We’re surrounded by fascinating, top-class Geography academics at St John’s - one Fellow is researching glaciers on Mars, while another is passionate about economic geography and serves as a European Affairs adviser to the House of Lords. They’re not only academics within the College; they’re also doing exciting work beyond the University bubble.

Through my BA at Cambridge, I’ve been able to study both human and physical geography. The quality of the degree is excellent, and the range of specialisms within the Department is really impressive.

The historic and beautiful setting of St John’s is part of the College’s personality, and I get to enjoy it as the place I live. When I’m walking around, people smile and say hello - even if they don’t know you.

There are lots of ways for geographers at St John’s to connect across year groups, which is really helpful in a small cohort. For my dissertation, I’ll be conducting research in Australia, and the College is helping to fund my trip — I’m so grateful, as I wouldn’t be able to go otherwise.

St John’s has shaped my entire Cambridge experience. It’s sporty, sociable, and I honestly can’t imagine being at any other College. I’m a five-minute cycle from my lectures, a two-minute walk from the supermarket, and we have amazing sports grounds just across the road.

I got my Blue in hockey last year, so I’m a member of the College’s Eagles and Flamingos Club for elite sportsmen and women - I find it incredible that we have that facility right on our doorstep.

Applying

We are looking for people who are intelligent and independent thinkers, deeply curious about their subject and willing to push themselves.

We select the brightest and most committed students, so work hard to secure excellent examination results, and continue to perform very well in school/college in your penultimate and final years so that your teachers are able to confirm that you are one of their very best students when writing your UCAS reference.

Successful applicants not only excel in their school subjects, they can evidence their passion for Geography. This might come from discussing a book or podcast on a Geography topic that excites you, or setting out how you put Geography into practice through, for example, running your own sustainability initiative in your local park or supporting the environmental plan at your school or college.

Tell us which parts of the Cambridge degree programme interest you and why you feel you would benefit from our teaching approach, which includes lectures and field trips alongside the Cambridge supervision system of small group teaching.

If you are invited to interview, you’ll usually have one interview, lasting no more than 40 minutes, with a Director of Studies and a teaching Fellow in Geography.

We aim to find out from you at first hand about your motivation and aptitude for the course. Interviews are friendly and informal, subject focused and cover some technical and subject-related questions. No special preparation is necessary or indeed desirable.

Our societies

Purchas Society

St John’s Geography and Land Economy students are brought together as a community through The Purchas Society, named after the medieval English cleric and alumnus who published reports by travellers to foreign countries.

The Rev’d Samuel Purchas famously attempted to summarise the nature of the entire globe in 20 volumes without ever straying from his armchair. His works can be found in the College Library.

Our society establishes a creative and educational ecosystem for the College’s Geography and Land Economy students. We hold talks, competition initiatives and collaborative events, along with a termly Formal Hall.
