Dr Wight's primary employment was within the NHS as a full-time Consultant Histopathologist at Addenbrooke’s Hospital. He was director of the Histopathology Department and sometime overall clinical director of (hospital) Pathology, as well as programme director of postgraduate medical training in Histopathology for the East Anglian region.
He taught cellular pathology for Part II of the Natural Sciences Tripos and gave lectures on clinical pathology, liver disease and diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
His research focuses on human and experimental liver transplantation and the preservation of organs (particularly livers) awaiting transplantation. He also investigated the recognition and definition of the causes of liver dysfunction in what was then the new field of liver transplantation (introduced in the 1970s by the late Professor Sir Roy Calne FRS) to enable appropriate therapy.
