Dr Downey studied Mathematics and Economics as an undergraduate. As a master's student, she looked at the relationship between capitalism and democracy, in particular through the work of Joseph Schumpeter. During her PhD studies in the USA, she studied monetary policy and the history of political thought.
Dr Downey teaches courses in political theory and political economy. In particular she teaches courses at the intersection of democratic theory and macroeconomic policy.
