Departmental homepageDr Downey studied Mathematics and Economics as an undergraduate. As a master's student, she looked at the relationship between capitalism and democracy, in particular through the work of Joseph Schumpeter. During her PhD studies in the USA, she studied monetary policy and the history of political thought.
Dr Downey teaches courses in political theory and political economy. In particular she teaches courses at the intersection of democratic theory and macroeconomic policy.
Dr Downey is interested in the relationship between democracy and macroeconomics. Recently her research has focused on the interaction between legislatures and central banks. She has also published on the macroeconomics of the green transition, credit policy and macroeconomic stability. Current projects include the relationship between freedom and macroeconomic policy and critical reflections on the idea of democratizing finance.
