Departmental homepageDr Castelvecchi studied composition at the Conservatorio Santa Cecilia in Rome and holds a laurea in humanities from the University of Rome I – La Sapienza and an MA and PhD in Music from the University of Chicago.
Most of Dr Castelvecchi's teaching has centred around music of the 18th and 19th centuries, the theory of genre and textual criticism (critical editions).
He has published critical editions of works by Rossini and Verdi, and books and articles on 18th- and 19th-century opera (including Mozart and Rossini) and on musical dramaturgy more generally.
Authored book: Sentimental Opera: Questions of Genre in the Age of Bourgeois Drama (Cambridge University Press, 2013).
Editor and co-translator of Abramo Basevi’s The Operas of Giuseppe Verdi of 1859 (University of Chicago Press, 2013).
