Professor Horrocks was educated at Manchester Grammar School and Downing College. After a period working in the oil industry, he completed his PhD and was elected a Research Fellow at Downing before taking up a Lectureship in Linguistics at SOAS, University of London. He returned to Cambridge in 1983 as Lecturer in Classics and Fellow of St John’s. He was elected Professor of Comparative Philology in 1997 and served in this role until his retirement in 2016.
