‘Exceptional pastoral care’ earns St John’s Tutor student recognition

A Fellow in Education at St John’s College has been honoured in the Cambridge Excellence Awards held by the University’s student union

Dr Morag Morrison-Helme has been described as ‘an absolute rock’ by undergraduates and postgraduates across the University of Cambridge who nominated her for a student support prize.

Associate Professor in Arts Education in the Faculty of Education, and a College Lecturer, Tutor and Fellow at St John’s, Dr Morrison-Helme has won the Student Support by a Member of Academic Staff prize in the Cambridge Excellence Awards.

The recognition from her students and tutees is a highlight of her career, said Dr Morrison-Helme. “It is wonderful to be part of this University. The opportunity we have to work with the brightest and most talented students in this country and beyond is incredibly fulfilling in itself, but I am also daily privileged to work with the warmest and most brilliant of this group. I thank them for this incredible honour.”

Cambridge SU’s annual awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of students and staff across the University who go above and beyond to enhance the Cambridge experience – from inspiring student leadership, innovation, and community building to exceptional teaching and professional support.

Dr Morrison-Helme was nominated by undergraduate, MPhil and PhD students from the Faculty of Education, as well as her tutees at St John’s.

The award citation, in which she is described as ‘an absolute rock’ and ‘a constant source of strength’, continues: “She has been celebrated for her exceptional pastoral care, whether ensuring students have everything they need to excel, guiding researchers through complex doctoral journeys, or simply brightening the College experience with her termly social events.”

Shufan Zhang, PhD student in Education at St John’s, said Dr Morrison-Helme is ‘extraordinarily supportive of her students, both academically and personally’. “She is always willing to give her time, energy and care to students, not only guiding them through their studies and research, but also supporting them during difficult moments in their lives.

“She genuinely cares about students as whole people.”

Organisers received more than 400 nominations this year for a series of awards, which take place every June.
