Exceptional sports duo celebrated at annual Colours Dinner

Students from across St John’s celebrate at traditional awards event recognising achievement and good character in sport

Two final-year students have been honoured at the College’s Annual General Athletics Club Colours Dinner for their significant contribution to sport at St John’s.

Sixth-year medic Tomos Mather and fourth-year scientist Ed Hulme were awarded prizes following the traditional celebratory Colours Dinner in Hall on Monday 11 May.

The dinner, attended by members of the College’s sports clubs and societies, is held every year and recognises exceptional achievements and good character in the sports women and men of St John’s.

Tomos received the Bob Fuller Award 2026, which goes to the individual who has made the best contribution to College sport, and Ed won this year’s Jim Williams Memorial Prize for his significant involvement in field sports. The Master, Heather Hancock, presented the awards.

The Presidents of The Eagles’ and Flamingos’ Clubs – twin sports societies of St John’s for elite athletes – said Tomos is an extremely well-liked sportsman across several teams, most notably being a key player for both the College rugby and football teams.

“As a sixth-year medic it is impressive to see the commitment he continues to show to playing College sport including at times playing multiple games in one day,” they added.

“He has won multiple rugby Cuppers and was a key figure in the football team's memorable Cuppers run to the final in 2024. He demonstrates all the values associated with sportsmanship and is a great teammate.”

Head Groundsman Keith Ellis, who chose Ed as winner of the memorial prize, said: “This year’s Jim Williams Prize for field club sport is awarded to someone who has shown a fantastic commitment across multiple College sports over his four years at St John’s, having played dozens of games across both hockey and cricket.

“Ed has been equally dedicated academically, achieving a first in his second and third years, and being on track for another in his final year.”
