Food & drink

With a reputation for some of the best food & drink in Cambridge, our team pride themselves on using sustainable free-range, organic, and locally-sourced ingredients—always with dietary needs in mind.

At St John’s, dining is at the heart of College life with a range of excellent, heavily-discounted home-cooked meal options available if you don’t fancy catering for yourself in your shared accommodation.
From our historic 16th century Hall to our award-winning Buttery dining room, the food and drink choices at St John’s are in stunning spaces. You can meet friends, socialise, or find a quiet corner with a coffee and cake to work. We pride ourselves on our selection of free-range, organic and locally-sourced products, and dietary needs are catered for.

The BUttery

The design award-winning Buttery at St John’s, with its living wall of green foliage, is a bustling self-service restaurant.

It provides a variety of meals and snacks – from sandwiches and baked potatoes to main courses, vegetables, salads, and delicious puddings and desserts, all made by our expert catering team.

Lunch and dinner are available every day (apart from one week at Christmas), along with breakfast on Wednesdays, and a popular brunch and roast on weekends.

bar

Our lively College Bar is the social hub of St John’s where students can relax, chat and take part in events such as beer and cheese tastings, music evenings and weekly quiz nights.

Locally-sourced artisan beers are served along with lagers, ciders, soft drinks and snacks, all at subsidised prices.

Café

Our friendly, modern Café is the perfect place to grab a barista coffee enroute to your lecture, or stay awhile to chat with your friends or work while tucking into a delicious cake or pastry.

The Café also offers fresh sandwiches and soups every day, along with other hot, iced and canned drinks for that more casual pit-stop.

Hall

In our atmospheric 16th-century Hall students wear black gowns and can enjoy three-course candle-lit dinners, known as Formal Hall – an enchanting Cambridge tradition that is heavily discounted by the College.

There are 150 tickets available for Formal Hall five days a week and our students are welcome to bring along friends or guests to dine.
