Why Choose St John's for Design?

Photograph of the 21st-century Buttery roof

Design is a new Cambridge degree and Dr Darshil Shah, Director of Studies at St John’s for our Design students, is at the heart of its development. He works closely with our teaching Fellow in Architecture, Dr Sofia Nivarti.

The Design Tripos combines scientific literacy and creativity. It challenges you to address real-world problems, from the built environment to apps, AI and electronics. The strength and depth of St John’s Fellowship in adjacent disciplines such as Engineering gives our students ready access to insight from leading researchers.

Altogether, we have around 20 undergraduates in Design and Architecture, forming a passionate and thriving community with our graduate students and Fellows. Students run the College Architecture Society with student-organised talks, classes (eg life-drawing, CAD-skills, cross-crits) and social events.

We understand the special demands of studio-led teaching and learning. We provide excellent in-College support, including a drawing board in your room and a well-equipped Art Room.

Design may be new as a Cambridge course, but our alumni have influenced and led design innovation in countless ways, from Sir Charles Parson’s design of the steam turbine engine to Sir Cecil Beaton’s iconic reputation as an artist, photographer and costume designer.

Our academics

Supporting your studies

Summer Bursaries

Our generous Summer Bursary scheme enables St John's undergraduates to pursue their academic or educational interests or career-development opportunities for a period of up to eight weeks during the Long Vacation.

Any activity which would clearly add value to your career and personal development can be considered, and students have used their Summer Bursaries to fund a wide range of activities including  research projects, summer courses at other institutions, intermediate and advanced language courses, unpaid work experience and volunteering work in the UK and overseas.

Art and design spaces and resources

St John's is one of the few Colleges with an in-house art room, located right in the heart of College. It is open 24/7, which means our Architecture and Design students are able to carry out design work outside the opening hours of the departmental studio. It is also used by History of Art students, and is open to those on other courses.

St John’s also provides Architecture and Design undergraduate students with a drawing board, installed in their College room, for the duration of their studies. The space required by necessities such as model-making is also taken into account during the annual accommodation ballot.

Every year, applications from students of St John's are invited to apply for Travel Exhibitions and Grants, for the promotion of travel.

Travel Grants

There are currently more than 20 travel grants available to students of St John's, made possible by generous donor funding. These funds are available to help students extend and develop their subject knowledge by, for example, travelling to archaeological sites abroad, further international understanding, undertake adventurous travel and much more.

I couldn’t decide on STEM or Fine Art but Design at Cambridge is a perfect bridge between them. I have a lot of contact hours, so it’s busy, but my Director of Studies is very supportive.

Being in a small cohort in a large College means I’ve met lots of people. I’m from the North-West and was worried about leaving home for university here, but it’s been amazing as the community is so diverse.

My identity as a Muslim is important to me and it’s been wonderful to get involved in Cambridge University Islamic Society, I feel part of the community.

Applying

Being a Design student at St John's is academically stretching across a range of disciplines. You need to excel in your examinations, achieving well in both arts and sciences, and a strong performance in Mathematics is particularly important.

We are seeking creative, highly motivated and committed individuals with outstanding artistic ability and some science background, a strong three-dimensional sense, excellent writing skills and a solid grounding in Mathematics.

Applicants who stand out submit a strong portfolio with a range of subject matter that illustrates your personal interests, experience, imagination and ability in the visual and material arts. We are keen to see your informal and preparatory work, as well as more formal work, so we can understand how you observe the world around you and how you test and develop ideas. We want to see your work in a range of media and your portfolio should demonstrate this. You can include material prepared for school-leaving examinations but creative work executed outside formal courses is also welcome.

Look for ways of developing your interest in Design beyond the school/college curriculum. Tell us what catches your attention in the news, whether it is cutting-edge designs in the built environment, the use of sustainable materials for everyday products, or solutions to engineering problems in the world today.

If you are invited to interview, there is one interview with the Directors of Studies for Architecture and Design and it will last around 30 minutes.

At interview, we encourage you to bring a sketchbook with ongoing drawings. It may be in any media (pencil, charcoal, crayon etc) and ideally will include a variety of subject matter.

We use the interview to assess your understanding of physical space and ask you to talk through your portfolio. You can show us additional work during the interview if you wish. We may explore how you have developed your interest in and understanding of Design beyond the school curriculum.

Our societies

Architecture Society

The society reflects our strong Architecture community at St John’s, where we have our own well-resourced Art Room.

We promote the subject as an academic discipline, encourage creative pursuits, represent the interests of College architects, and look after the Art Room, where students can produce drawings, build elaborate models and ask peers for guidance.

Events include talks, discussions and career sessions with professionals, with the chance to network and expand architectural thinking.

St John’s Architecture students are automatically in the society and enquiries are welcome from other College members.
