Dr Arul completed his undergraduate degrees in Physics and Chemical & Materials Engineering at the University of Auckland, before moving to the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge, for a PhD in Physics. His PhD research was supported by the Rutherford Foundation of the Royal Society Te Aparangi of New Zealand and the Winton Programme for the Physics of Sustainability. He is now a Research Fellow at St John’s College performing independent research in the field of nanophotonics and optoelectronics.
His research interests include the science of how light can be trapped to the nanoscale to control optoelectronic properties and affect chemical transformations. He is fascinated by the fundamental study of how light can be harnessed to create new hybrid light-matter states and how these enable new quantum technologies and photonic sensing for sustainable technologies and climate science.
